What you'll study

This programme combines core public health subjects with a specialisation sequence, giving you a foundation in population health theory and applied practice. Typical study areas include epidemiology and biostatistics, health promotion and behaviour change, environmental and occupational health, health systems and policy, research methods, and program planning and evaluation.

Students usually complete a mix of theoretical units, applied workshops and a capstone or industry project. Practical components often include community engagement activities and workplace-based placement or practicum units that develop skills in needs assessment, program implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Many students also study specific topics such as Indigenous and rural health, communicable disease control, health economics and digital public health.

Entry requirements

Entry is normally available to applicants who have completed an Australian senior secondary qualification or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas school. Central Queensland University also accepts applicants via recognised alternative pathways, including vocational diplomas, previous tertiary study and mature-age entry with relevant work experience.

International applicants must meet CQU's academic entry standards and demonstrate English language competence through recognised tests or qualifications. Applicants with relevant work experience in health, community services or allied sectors may be eligible for credit or advanced standing for prior learning.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles across government, non‑government and community sectors. Common career paths include public health officer, health promotion officer, program coordinator, community health worker, policy support officer, research assistant in public health projects and roles in population health surveillance.

With further study or specialised postgraduate qualifications, graduates may move into epidemiology, health policy and planning, health protection and environmental health, or leadership roles in health services. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate research or professional practice degrees.
