What you'll study

The course combines design studio practice with technical building science and documentation. Core subjects typically include architectural design studio, building technology and materials, structural fundamentals for non-engineers, construction documentation and detailing, and building codes and statutory processes. You will learn digital design and production workflows, including CAD, Revit/BIM principles and 3D visualisation, together with sustainable design strategies and energy-efficient building solutions.

Students also study professional practice topics such as project management, contract fundamentals, cost estimation and client communication. Learning is delivered through a mix of studio projects, technical workshops, software labs and assessment that emphasises real-world documentation and constructible design. Elective units or minor sequences may allow you to focus on areas such as sustainable design, advanced digital fabrication or interior design.

Entry requirements

Typical entry into the Bachelor of Building Design requires completion of secondary schooling (or equivalent qualification) with sufficient academic results for undergraduate admission. Mature-age applicants with relevant work experience in building, drafting or construction may be considered through alternative entry pathways. Applicants with a related TAFE diploma or advanced standing may receive credit for prior learning, shortening the time to completion.

International applicants must meet CQU's English language requirements, with recognised test scores or approved evidence of prior study in English. Some intakes may ask for a short portfolio or examples of work if you have design experience, but formal submission requirements are confirmed during the application process.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles across residential and light-commercial building design and documentation. Common job titles include building designer, architectural CAD/BIM technician, documentation coordinator, design consultant and display home designer. Many graduates work in small design studios, drafting firms, builders’ offices or as self-employed designers producing plans for council approval and construction.

Skills developed in the degree — such as construction documentation, regulatory knowledge, BIM workflows and client liaison — are also useful for related careers in building surveying, specification writing, project administration and construction management (additional qualifications or registration may be required for some pathways).
