What you'll study

This program combines core social work theory, practice skills and applied research with studies in social policy, human development and working with diverse communities. You will study topics such as social work practice and ethics, human behaviour and the social environment, social policy analysis, research methods for social work, mental health, child and family welfare, ageing, and community development. Indigenous perspectives, cultural competency and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are embedded across the curriculum.

A major component is professional field education: students complete a sequence of supervised placements in statutory, non‑government and community service settings to develop applied practice skills, professional conduct and reflective practice. Assessment blends essays, case studies, practice demonstrations, group projects and placement reports.

Entry requirements

• Secondary school completion (or equivalent) with a competitive selection rank or alternative pathway through recognised prior learning or diploma articulation—applicants should consult the university for specific admissions pathways available to them.
• Some applicants are offered admission on the basis of tertiary study, relevant work or life experience; interstate and international applicants follow the university’s standard admission criteria.
• Successful applicants must meet professional suitability requirements for placement, which typically include a police check, working with children and vulnerable people checks, and evidence of specified immunisations; additional health requirements may apply for placement hosts.
• Domestic and international applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet CQU’s English language requirements for undergraduate study.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) where the degree is accredited, and can work across a wide range of settings. Common graduate roles include child protection practitioner, community development worker, case manager, mental health support worker, hospital social worker, aged‑care case coordinator, family services worker, school wellbeing officer and roles in corrections and homelessness services.

Career pathways lead to specialist practice, supervisory and management roles, policy and advocacy positions, community program development, or further study at postgraduate level (for example, clinical social work, policy/management or research degrees).
