What you'll study

This programme builds core skills in critical reasoning, argument analysis and conceptual clarity while covering the principal areas of philosophical enquiry. In the first year you will typically study introductions to logic and critical thinking, the history of philosophy, and foundational topics in ethics and epistemology. In subsequent years you can expect modules on metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, political and social philosophy, and applied ethics (for example medical or environmental ethics).

Optional modules commonly allow interdisciplinary study with related subjects such as politics, history, sociology or literature. Teaching methods combine lectures, small-group seminars and tutorials, supported by formative written work and seminar presentations. Assessment is normally by a mixture of essays, written exams, oral presentations and a final-year dissertation or extended essay that lets you develop an independent research project under academic supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold standard undergraduate entry qualifications (for example A-levels, BTEC or equivalent international qualifications). Philosophy does not generally require a specific subject at school, though prior study in a humanities or social science can be helpful. Mature students and applicants with non-traditional qualifications are welcome; selection may take account of personal statement, references and relevant experience.

A philosophy degree develops transferable skills prized by employers: critical thinking, clear written and oral communication, problem solving and ethical reasoning.
