What you'll study

This degree balances subject-centred modules in English language, literature and media with core modules on teaching and learning in secondary contexts. You will study how to teach key elements of the English curriculum, including reading, writing, spoken language, and literature, alongside broader themes such as curriculum design, assessment, inclusion and classroom management.

• Subject knowledge modules: advanced study of prose, poetry and drama; language structure and development; contemporary and historical approaches to literature; literacy across the curriculum.
• Pedagogy and professional practice: introduction to education theory; adolescent cognitive and social development; behaviour strategies; inclusive practice and differentiation for diverse classrooms.
• Assessment and curriculum: formative and summative assessment; designing schemes of work; planning lessons for mixed-ability groups; use of digital resources in English teaching.
• Research and enquiry: small-scale classroom research projects, reflective professional practice and critical engagement with educational policy and evidence.
• School experience: progressively longer placements in local secondary schools, alongside on-campus workshops and mentor support; observation, co-teaching and independent teaching opportunities.

The programme is typically structured so that year one builds subject knowledge and introduces teaching concepts, year two deepens pedagogical understanding and increases placement time, and year three focuses on advanced study, a substantial school-based project and preparation for career or further teacher training.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate good academic ability in English through prior qualifications at A-level, Scottish Higher, BTEC or recognised equivalent, and to show commitment to working with young people. Typical entry profiles include a mix of subject-level qualifications and evidence of relevant experience in secondary settings, such as voluntary work, tutoring or classroom support.

• GCSE-level (or equivalent) passes in English and Mathematics are normally required.
• Experience of secondary school environments is strongly recommended and often evidenced at interview.
• Applicants must provide academic references and may be required to attend an interview and undergo suitability checks, including an enhanced disclosure/background check, before placement in schools.
• Mature and non-traditional applicants with alternative qualifications or substantial relevant experience are welcomed and considered on an individual basis.

Career prospects

Graduates leave with strong subject expertise in English and a clear understanding of secondary classroom practice, making the degree an excellent foundation for progressing to teacher training, such as a PGCE or School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programmes leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

• Many students go on to undertake teacher training and become secondary English teachers.
• Other career paths include roles as teaching assistants, literacy coordinators, exam officers, education support workers, learning mentors and youth workers.
• Skills developed on the course — communication, critical analysis, lesson planning and classroom management — are also valued in publishing, curriculum development, education administration and further academic study (MA, MEd).
