What you'll study

This programme builds a foundation in general biology, chemistry and quantitative skills before moving into marine‑focused topics. Typical modules and subjects include:

• Core biological sciences: cell biology, genetics, evolution, organismal biology and ecology.
• Chemistry and supporting science: introductory and organic chemistry, biochemistry and statistics for the life sciences.
• Marine specialties: marine ecology, marine zoology, coastal oceanography, fisheries biology, marine conservation and aquaculture principles.
• Practical skills: field methods (intertidal and subtidal surveys), laboratory techniques, microscopy, molecular methods used in marine biology, and data analysis using ecological statistics and geographic information systems (GIS).
• Optional and advanced topics: physiological ecology, population dynamics, habitat restoration, climate change impacts on marine systems and advanced research projects.
• Capstone and research opportunities: honours thesis or independent research project for students on the honours path, plus supervised placements and internship options with research groups and industry partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a high school diploma (or equivalent) with strong preparation in the sciences. Typical academic prerequisites include biology and chemistry; mathematics or calculus is strongly recommended. Successful applicants usually demonstrate a solid academic record in science subjects and sufficient background in English.

International applicants or those whose first language is not English must meet the university’s English language proficiency requirements, which can be satisfied by recognised test scores or other approved credentials.
