What you'll study

This master’s programme combines core scientific modules, applied clinical training and a research project. Teaching covers advanced human nutrition, metabolism and nutrient requirements; assessment and management of malnutrition and diet-related disease (including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal and gastrointestinal conditions); lifecycle nutrition (paediatric, maternal and geriatric nutrition); and public-health nutrition and health promotion.

Practical and applied components typically include clinical dietetic practice and supervised placements in hospital and community settings, nutritional screening and counselling skills, foodservice management and dietetic communication. Research methods and statistics are taught to support a dissertation project, and students commonly study elective topics such as sports nutrition, nutrigenomics, food safety and quality, or health policy depending on available options.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory classes, placement supervision and independent research. Assessment usually mixes written exams, case-based assignments, practical assessments, placement reports and a masters dissertation or capstone research project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics, food science, biomedical science, public health or a related health subject. Candidates with professional experience as registered dietitians, nurses or allied-health practitioners may also be considered, particularly for advanced standing or part-time routes.

Typical documentation required includes an academic transcript, a curriculum vitae, and academic or professional references. Applicants whose first language is not the language of instruction must provide evidence of language proficiency (for example recognised English language test scores if the programme is taught in English). Selection may include an interview or assessment of prior practical experience, and some routes require proof of eligibility to undertake clinical placements (such as health clearances or malpractice insurance where relevant).
