What you'll study

The programme combines core sociological theory with intensive training in empirical research methods and applied topics. Typical areas of study include classical and contemporary social theory, social stratification and inequality, urban and regional sociology, migration and integration, labour markets and work, and social policy. A distinctive emphasis is placed on methodological competence: advanced statistics, multivariate analysis, survey design, qualitative methods such as in-depth interviewing and ethnography, and use of software for data analysis.

Programme structure normally comprises taught courses and seminars alongside supervised research. Students complete compulsory modules in research design and methods, electives that allow specialisation (for example urban studies, family and life course, or comparative welfare analysis), and an independent Master's thesis based on original empirical work.
