What you'll study

This MSc combines technical, investigative and management perspectives on cyber security. You study core topics such as network and infrastructure security, applied cryptography, secure software development, digital forensics and ethical hacking, alongside modules on risk management, security governance and legal, regulatory and ethical issues.

The programme is typically delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions and practical workshops. You will work on real-world scenarios and case studies, undertake hands-on penetration testing and forensic analysis in dedicated labs, and complete an independent research project or an industry-focused dissertation that brings together technical and managerial aspects of cyber security.

Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to hold a UK undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (for example computing, computer science, engineering, information technology, mathematics) at or above second‑class honours level. Applicants with a degree in another discipline but with relevant professional experience or demonstrable technical ability may also be considered.

In addition to academic qualifications, the programme looks for evidence of numeracy and technical aptitude, demonstrable interest in cyber security and, where English is not the first language, an appropriate recognised English language qualification. Admissions tutors may invite applicants to provide a portfolio, references or attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to roles across technical, investigative and managerial streams in public and private sectors. Typical job titles include cyber security analyst, penetration tester/ethical hacker, digital forensics analyst, incident responder, security consultant, security architect, and cyber risk or compliance analyst. With experience, graduates can move into senior positions such as security manager, head of information security or chief information security officer (CISO).

The course is also suitable for students who wish to continue into research or PhD study in cyber security and related computing disciplines.
