What you'll study

The programme blends taught modules with practical training and an independent research project. Core themes include environmental microbiology, ecological and evolutionary responses to environmental change, molecular and genomic techniques applied to ecology, biogeochemical processes, pollution and contaminant dynamics, and quantitative methods for environmental data (statistics and modelling).

• Advanced laboratory skills: molecular methods such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing approaches and bioinformatics pipelines for community analyses.
• Field-based techniques: survey design, sampling strategies, environmental monitoring and ecotoxicology assessments.
• Environmental processes: nutrient cycling, carbon fluxes, contaminant fate and ecosystem functioning.
• Quantitative approaches: statistical analysis, ecological modelling and data visualisation relevant to environmental bioscience.
• Research project: an extended individual dissertation carried out under academic supervision, often using laboratory, field or large-scale datasets to address a topic in environmental bioscience.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, laboratory classes and fieldwork, with assessment by a combination of coursework, practical reports, exams and the dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally hold a good honours degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, biochemistry, microbiology or a closely related discipline. Equivalent international qualifications are accepted. Applicants with a lower classification but significant relevant laboratory or field experience, or a strong postgraduate diploma, may also be considered.

All candidates whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate English language proficiency to the level specified by the University of Warwick for postgraduate taught programmes. Admissions decisions take into account academic record, references and any relevant research or professional experience.
