What you'll study

The Law with Politics degree brings together core modules in English law with complementary modules in political analysis, theory and comparative politics. You will study the legal foundations that underpin the UK legal system alongside political institutions, ideologies and processes at domestic and international levels.

• Core legal modules: introductions to the legal system, contract law, tort, criminal law, public (constitutional and administrative) law, and legal skills such as legal method, research and advocacy. Optional advanced law topics commonly include human rights, commercial law, family law, employment law and jurisprudence.
• Politics modules: modules typically cover political theory, British politics and government, comparative politics, international relations and global governance, public policy, and quantitative and qualitative research methods for political analysis.
• Structure: study is usually staged over three years, with the option at Keele to include a placement year or a year abroad on eligible routes. Early years focus on core legal doctrine and political concepts; later years allow greater choice from optional modules and a dissertation or long research project in either law or politics.
• Learning methods: a mix of lectures, small-group seminars, workshops, moot courts or simulated hearings, supervised research projects and assessed coursework. There are opportunities for practical experience through clinics, pro‑bono projects, placements and internships facilitated by the university.

Entry requirements

Keele considers a range of qualifications. Applicants are typically expected to have standard secondary qualifications (A-levels, BTEC, International Baccalaureate or equivalent) at a level consistent with competitive single‑honours humanities and social science programmes. Admissions decisions also take into account personal statements, references and any relevant experience. Mature students and those with Access to Higher Education qualifications are welcome; international qualifications are assessed against UK equivalence.

Specific course offers and requirements can vary by year and by applicant profile (including contextual offers). Applicants who do not have formal qualifications may be considered if they can demonstrate relevant experience and potential to succeed on the programme.

Graduates from Law with Politics go on to a range of careers in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The degree provides a strong basis for legal careers (further professional training is required to qualify as a solicitor or barrister), and for roles in policy, government, public administration, political research, campaigning and advocacy.
