What you'll study

The MSc Chemistry combines advanced taught modules with extensive laboratory practice and an independent research project. Core themes typically cover advanced inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, modern analytical techniques and instrumental methods. You will study topics such as spectroscopy and structural characterisation, reaction mechanisms and synthesis, physical methods and kinetics, and computational or molecular modelling.

Teaching blends seminars, workshops and intensive laboratory classes to develop practical competence in modern instrumentation (for example NMR, mass spectrometry, chromatography and X‑ray techniques) and in data analysis. A major research dissertation — carried out under academic supervision in one of Keele's research groups or with an industrial partner — forms a substantial component, allowing you to design experiments, collect and interpret data, and present your findings in written and oral form.

Optional modules and project themes often reflect active research areas and may include materials chemistry, catalysis, polymer chemistry, environmental and green chemistry, or computational approaches. Training in research methods, laboratory safety and transferable skills such as scientific communication, project management and statistics is integrated into the programme.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK undergraduate degree in chemistry or a closely related discipline, typically at a good honours level. Candidates with strong degrees in other natural sciences who have substantial chemistry content in their programme may also be considered, sometimes with conditions such as specified preparatory work or bridging modules.

International applicants should hold a recognised equivalent qualification. Evidence of practical laboratory experience and a clear statement of research interests are helpful. All applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's English language requirement.
