What you'll study

The programme balances core theoretical modules in applied linguistics with practical TESOL-focused units and a substantial independent research project. Core topics typically include second language acquisition, research methods in applied linguistics, language description and analysis, and principles of language teaching and learning.

• Research methods and dissertation: training in quantitative and qualitative approaches, culminating in an independent dissertation on a topic in applied linguistics or TESOL.
• Second language acquisition: theories and empirical findings about how additional languages are learned across contexts and stages.
• TESOL methodology and materials design: classroom approaches, lesson planning, syllabus design, and production/evaluation of teaching materials.
• Language assessment and testing: principles and practice of assessing learners, test design, validation and classroom assessment techniques.
• Optional modules: students may choose from areas such as corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, multilingualism and language policy, pragmatics, or technology-enhanced language learning, depending on availability and staff expertise.
• Practical and professional components: opportunities for observed teaching practice, classroom observation, or practitioner-led workshops are usually built into the course to connect theory with applied contexts.

The programme is offered with flexible study modes: a full-time pathway that can be completed within one academic year and part-time routes that extend over a longer period to accommodate working professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant discipline (for example English, linguistics, modern languages, education or a related humanities/social science), or an equivalent professional qualification. Applicants with substantial professional experience in language teaching or related fields but without a conventional degree are considered on an individual basis.

All applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency. Typical evidence includes recognised international tests or other qualifications accepted by the university. Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide a sample of written work and/or attend an interview.
