What you'll study

This programme blends courses in political science, economics, history, anthropology, and language study with WPI’s hallmark project-based curriculum. Early coursework establishes core conceptual tools such as comparative politics, international political economy, global governance, research methods, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. Students pursue intermediate and advanced language proficiency and choose thematic concentrations or elective tracks—examples include development and humanitarian affairs, global security, transnational migration, or international business and trade.

Central to the degree are substantial research-and-practice projects. Students complete team-based, real-world projects through WPI’s Global Projects Program and the on-campus Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), applying classroom knowledge to field problems in partnership with organisations worldwide. A Major Qualifying Project (MQP) or equivalent capstone allows students to undertake independent research or a policy-oriented practicum that integrates disciplinary knowledge, language skills, and professional competencies.

• Methods and skills: social-science research methods, data analysis, policy writing, negotiation and mediation techniques.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high-school diploma or equivalent with a record of strong academic performance. Recommended preparation includes coursework in social studies, history, mathematics, writing, and at least one foreign language. WPI considers the whole application package, including academic transcripts, a personal statement, and recommendation letters; standardised tests may be optional depending on the applicant profile.

International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised tests or approved alternative evidence of English-medium study. Transfer applicants should submit college transcripts and descriptions of completed coursework to evaluate credit for prior study. Admissions decisions also take into account motivation for project-based learning and interest in international issues.

Career prospects

Graduates of the International & Global Studies programme move into a wide range of careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Common pathways include roles in diplomacy and foreign service, international development and humanitarian aid, policy analysis, intelligence and security studies, international business and trade, and global project management. Other options include journalism, advocacy and human-rights organisations, and consulting.

Many graduates pursue graduate study in international relations, public policy, law, development studies or business. The programme’s emphasis on research methods, language competence and project experience also prepares students for positions that require cross-cultural communication, programme evaluation, data-informed policy work and leadership on transnational issues.
