What you'll study

This foundation degree combines core scientific theory with extensive practical laboratory training. Modules typically cover laboratory techniques and instrumentation, microbiology and infection control, organic and inorganic chemistry, human anatomy and physiology, analytical chemistry and spectroscopy, and research methods and data analysis. You will also study professional practice, health and safety in the laboratory, and evidence-based laboratory reporting.

Teaching is a mix of laboratory practicals, workshops, seminars and project work. A strong emphasis is placed on developing transferable skills such as laboratory record keeping, quality assurance, risk assessment, scientific communication and team-working. The programme usually includes a work-based learning component or placement so you can apply skills in an occupational setting and build links with employers.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a Level 3 qualification such as A-levels, a BTEC National, or an equivalent vocational qualification in a relevant subject. GCSE English and mathematics at a standard equivalent to grade C/4 are typically required. Mature applicants and those with relevant workplace experience are encouraged to apply; admissions may consider prior experiential learning and interviews or portfolios as part of the assessment.

Some roles and placement providers require satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and immunisation records; additional health checks or occupational requirements may apply before undertaking work-based learning.

Career prospects

Graduates normally move into technician and support roles in a range of settings, including clinical and diagnostic laboratories, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, environmental and water testing laboratories, food and drink quality control, forensic and police support units, and public health agencies. Common job titles include laboratory technician, analytical technician, quality control analyst and research assistant.

The FdSc is also designed to facilitate progression to an honours degree (top-up) in applied science, bioscience or related disciplines, which can open routes into senior technical roles, laboratory management or postgraduate study and professional qualifications.
