What you'll study

The curriculum covers foundational issues in trauma-informed education and how to apply basic principles in classrooms and schools. Candidates will learn to recognize signs of developmental trauma, understand triggers that may provoke reactive or dissociative responses, and demonstrate implementation of trauma-informed practices in their educational settings. The certificate requires 9 credits and is offered at the graduate level.

Entry requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 2.75 GPA.
• If selected, an interview with a department faculty member (in person, by phone, or via Skype).
• No GRE or other standardized test required for master’s and certificate admissions.
• Application materials include an online application form, a 1–2 page admissions essay answering specified questions, a resume, and transcripts (official transcripts required for completion of the application). International applicants and applicants without a bachelor’s degree have additional requirements.

Career prospects

On completing the certificate, and depending on state regulations, students may perform work as a trauma-informed supervisor or serve as a PK–12 teacher applying trauma-aware practices. The program is intended to prepare school personnel and related community members to better support children affected by trauma rather than to qualify graduates for clinical mental-health licensure.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Tuition is listed at $840 per credit in University materials. Antioch University New England notes that most students use some form of financial aid and encourages applicants to explore federal, state, public, and private options. The campus offers a 10% discount when three or more students from the same school or district attend an AUNE Education MEd or certificate program together, subject to specific conditions.
