What you'll study

The certificate comprises five foundational courses (15 credits total) delivered online. Course work centers on the interconnected issues affecting people, animals, and the environment and on pedagogies that raise awareness and empower change-making in classrooms and communities.

Entry requirements

To apply you must submit an online admissions application with essay questions, a resume/CV, and a non-refundable $50 application fee. Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended are required and should be emailed or mailed to Antioch University New England. Two letters of recommendation are required from people able to evaluate your professional or academic work (not relatives). Applicants may be interviewed by a faculty member if selected. Master’s and certificate applicants are not required to submit the GRE or other standardized tests; additional requirements apply for international applicants and for applicants without a bachelor’s degree. Applications are accepted for spring, summer, and fall; final deadlines are listed by term (example deadlines: Summer April 15, Fall August 15, Spring December 15).

Career prospects

The program prepares graduates to design and deliver humane-education curricula and to lead awareness-raising or advocacy efforts that address human, animal, and environmental concerns. Typical pathways include roles in K–12 and community education, nonprofit program development, curriculum design, and other positions where humane, place-based, or sustainability-focused education is applied. Credits are transferable into Antioch’s MEd or MA programs for those pursuing advanced qualifications.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Antioch advises students to explore federal, state, public, and private aid options; the majority of AUNE students use some form of financial aid and staff support is available to help identify suitable loan, scholarship, and grant packages. Antioch also offers a 10% tuition discount for three or more students from the same school or district attending AUNE Education MEd or certificate programs simultaneously, subject to specific limitations and conditions.
