Required coursework centers on the essentials of place-based education and on integrating local context across subjects. Core topics and course emphases include:

• Implementing place-based approaches in contemporary schools.
• Designing nature explorations and field-based learning experiences for children.
• Developing partnerships with local organizations and community stakeholders.
• Investigating place-based social justice issues and themes.
• Using place as a context to integrate language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, and technology.

Entry requirements

The certificate is designed for educators who already hold a master’s degree but is also available to others; application materials required are an online application with essay questions, a resume/CV, a non-refundable $50 application fee, official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions, and two letters of recommendation from professional or academic evaluators who are not related to the applicant. Applicants may be interviewed by a faculty member if selected. International applicants and applicants without a bachelor’s degree have additional requirements. Master’s and certificate programs do not require the GRE or any other standardized test.

Career prospects

Graduates leave able to design and lead place-based curricula, help colleagues understand and adopt place-based practices, foster meaningful student participation in communities, and contribute to place-based program development within their schools. The certificate supports roles such as classroom teacher, curriculum developer, instructional leader, or community partnership coordinator focused on experiential, locally grounded learning.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Antioch University New England reports that most students use some form of financial aid; the Place-Based Education Certificate is 12 credits and listed at $840 per credit. AUNE also offers a 10% tuition discount when three or more students from the same school or district enroll in AUNE Education MEd or certificate programs simultaneously.
