What you'll study

The major requires 36 credits in sociology: 18 credits of core courses and 18 credits of electives. Core topics include foundational sociological concepts, social institutions, inequality, and research methods. Example core courses listed are:

• SOC 1010: The Social World — a 3-credit, 7-week introduction to sociology covering concepts such as race, class, gender, family, education and religion and the development of a sociological imagination.
• SOC 2130: Sociological Theory — a 3-credit, 7-week course surveying major sociological theories and theorists across historical periods, including consideration of the scientific method in studying social life.

Students learn to describe and distinguish research techniques, design research projects using various data-gathering methods, evaluate sociological evidence critically, and present research results effectively in written and oral forms. Additional university core curriculum and elective credits are required to reach the 120-credit degree total.

Entry requirements

Admission requires an online application and a $50 application fee, official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must be at least four years post–high school, or two years post–high school with 60 or more college credits. Note that applicants must be at least two years post–high school to enroll in WP Online accelerated programs.
