What you'll study

Coursework combines theoretical and applied learning to develop scientific inquiry and evidence-based problem solving for buildings. Topics include building science fundamentals, environmental influences on building operation, thermodynamics, and job-readiness for co-op. Examples from Level 03 include:

• BSC1400 Building Science II — examines how environmental elements influence building operation; students apply principles of physics to develop strategies (42 hours).
• ENG1100 Thermodynamics — covers scientific foundations used in engineering-related disciplines including building science (42 hours).
• GEP1001 Cooperative Education and Job Readiness — prepares students for professional job search and workplace success.

Entry requirements

Standard entry is to the four-year degree. Graduates of the Construction Engineering Technician Ontario College Diploma or the Civil Engineering Technology Ontario College Advanced Diploma may apply to the pathway and receive credit for 22 courses, reducing time to degree completion to three years. The program is PGWP-eligible subject to current IRCC/CIP classifications and Algonquin review.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles that require understanding building performance and systems. Typical job titles and employers include building scientist, architectural or construction project manager, energy consultant, building inspector, researcher or junior analyst, technical staff in engineering firms, government agencies, or entrepreneurship in building-performance services.
