Programme overview

This Continuing Education and Workforce Development program trains students to process medical billing and apply official diagnostic and procedural codes across a variety of medical specialties. Completion of the defined course sequences makes students eligible to sit for AAPC certification exams (Certified Professional Biller - CPB® and Certified Professional Coder - CPC®). The program is delivered in a hybrid format with day and evening options and is offered as non-credit workforce training.

What you'll study

• CPB track (billing): CAH195 Medical Terminology for Billing & Coding; CAH252 Medical Billing - AAPC Certified Professional Biller (CPB®).
• CPC track (coding): CAH195 Medical Terminology for Billing & Coding; CAH185 Anatomy & Physiology for Medical Coding; CAH253 Medical Coding - AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC®).
• Instruction covers revenue-cycle processes, payer requirements, provider reimbursement practices, and use of official coding manuals (CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS) to code patient encounters across specialties.
• Program fees include the AAPC certification exam fee and a one-year AAPC membership.

Entry requirements

• Participants must successfully complete the course series identified for the chosen Workforce Training Certificate; certificates are competency-based and awarded monthly after course completion.
• Students may request approval to transfer up to 25% of total certificate contact hours from an accredited institution; course substitutions are not permitted.
• CAH195 and CAH185 may be waived for holders of certain current certifications or licenses: CNA; CMA/CCMA or other Medical Assistant certification; LPN; RN; EMT-B or EMT-I; CRT; AEMT; or Paramedic. Contact Healthcare Careers to verify eligibility before registering.
• Participants are expected to have English reading and listening skills; FCC recommends taking a free Accuplacer test and sharing results with CEWD if unsure.

Graduates are prepared for roles in healthcare administration that connect clinical care to an organization’s financial systems, such as medical biller, medical coder, or revenue-cycle specialist. Earning the CPB or CPC credential validates competence for employer hiring and can support direct entry into billing and coding positions across a range of medical specialties.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

• These are non-credit courses with tuition and fees subject to change; approximate per-track tuition is listed as $2,000 to $2,500 and includes exam fees and a one-year AAPC membership.
• A one-time yearly registration fee of $15 applies at first class registration; additional small residency fees apply for out-of-county and out-of-state students.
• Courses are not eligible for federal financial aid, but Continuing Education and Workforce Development students may apply for CEWD scholarships and other institutional financial assistance options to offset training costs.
