What you'll study

The program covers core principles and the practical application of building services: mechanics, thermodynamics, applied math and systems design. Students learn the workings of electrical systems, ventilation, temperature-control and refrigeration systems and how to install, operate and maintain them. Studies include analysis of modern buildings of varying sizes and site visits to examine complex building systems firsthand.

Entry requirements

In addition to college-wide admissions criteria, this program requires specific math and science preparation. Acceptable mathematics: Math TS 564-406/426 or SN 565-406/426 (or cégep equivalent 201-016-RE). Science prerequisites: Science ST 555 404/444 and STE 558 404, or ATS 557 406/416 and STE 558 402 (or cégep Physical Science 105-003-RE). Career prospects

Graduates find work across consulting, contracting, design, inspection, maintenance and manufacturing. Typical roles include designer positions in consulting engineering firms, supervisors in building maintenance, HVAC manufacturing and sales roles, and inspectors in governmental agencies. Graduates are qualified to pursue membership in the Ordre des technologues professionnels du Québec (OTPQ) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Approximately 20% continue on to university; some institutions grant advanced standing for Vanier courses.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Students can access governmental scholarships and may participate in Vanier’s Work-Study program. The Work-Study option includes two paid summer internships in addition to a compulsory internship during the final semester, helping to build a CV and industry connections.
