What you'll study

Coursework covers broad and specialized biology topics including animal biology, genetics, marine ecology, microbiology (food, medical, environmental), cell biology, molecular biology, virology, immunology, plant biology, entomology, General Physiology, Mammalian Anatomy and Cadaver Anatomy. Many courses include field components such as plant or animal taxonomy, ornithology and experiential work in lab techniques like microbiology and molecular methods.

Entry requirements

Only courses numbered 125 and above may be applied toward the major or a minor in biology. All prerequisite courses require a grade of C or better. Students must be eligible to take ENG-120 to begin major coursework and meet one of the following: Math SAT 480 or above, ACT Math score of 21 or above, or placement into MAT-120. Students with a GPA below 2.5 are not permitted to register for courses numbered above 300.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles in research facilities, healthcare organizations and government agencies, or for teaching positions with licensure. Typical job titles noted by the program include biological technician, biological science teacher, biologist and geneticist. The curriculum and co-curricular offerings (see research and internships) also support preparation for graduate and professional programs in medicine and STEM fields.
