What you'll study

Students study leadership concepts, theories, and models while developing practical leadership skills via guided experiential opportunities. The curriculum focuses on seeing connections between academic studies and post-graduation work, promoting collaboration across leadership and earth/energy programs. Graduates leave with specific, identifiable leadership skills intended to fit alongside their engineering training.

Entry requirements

Prospective participants must apply to and be accepted by the McDonough Leadership Program. Accepted students take part in the EXCEL Workshop, the orientation for incoming McDonough Scholars. In addition to the curricular components, students must complete 50 hours of approved community service.

Career prospects

The certificate prepares students to enter the engineering profession with enhanced leadership abilities, positioning them as agents of change in energy and environmental industries. It is particularly relevant for Petroleum and Environmental Engineering majors who expect to work in sectors where technical expertise must be paired with communication and leadership.
