What you'll study

Coursework emphasizes the chemistry of living organisms and problem-solving through science and mathematics. Students receive extensive laboratory experience in facilities that include a molecular biology lab, student research lab, Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer and gas chromatograph–mass spectrometer. Electives in chemistry and biology allow tailoring of the major, and students may present research at conferences such as American Chemical Society national meetings. Strong performers may be nominated for Beta Beta Beta and Gamma Sigma Epsilon honors; the major can also lead to an American Chemical Society certified degree.

Entry requirements

Admission follows Marietta College's undergraduate entry processes and the program requires completion of the college's liberal-arts core plus the biochemistry major curriculum. Successful students typically have a solid background in chemistry, biochemistry and biology and skills in mathematics. While an internship is not mandatory for graduation, the department encourages participation in NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) and recommends planning ahead if seeking study abroad because of the program's heavy course load.

Career prospects

Graduates move into graduate and professional schools as well as industry and clinical roles. Recent alumni have progressed to programs at institutions such as Purdue (Veterinary Medicine), University of Cincinnati (Medical School), University of Nebraska (Ph.D. in Biochemistry), and others in pharmacy, biomedical engineering and physician assistant studies. Internship placements and research experiences have included Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and University of North Carolina. Professional outcomes listed by alumni include roles such as vice president at industry firms, senior director of clinical research, chemist supervisor, obstetrician/gynecologist, optometrist and regional director positions.
