What you'll study

The MSN curriculum combines core graduate nursing coursework with concentration-specific modules. Core topics emphasise advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, health assessment, nursing research methods, health policy and leadership. Across the three pathways — Nursing Administration, Nursing Research and Clinical Nursing — students take targeted modules and complete supervised practicum experiences.

• Nursing Administration: courses in leadership and organisational behaviour, finance and resource management for health services, quality improvement, human resource issues in nursing, strategic planning and healthcare law and ethics. Practicum placements focus on management roles in hospitals, long-term care, community health organisations or ambulatory settings.
• Nursing Research: courses in quantitative and qualitative research methods, biostatistics, programme evaluation, grant-writing and evidence synthesis. The pathway culminates in a thesis or capstone research project designed to prepare nurses to lead or contribute to clinical research and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, and specialty-focused practicum hours. Clinical coursework is paired with supervised patient-care experiences and may include topics such as chronic disease management, care across the lifespan, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Instruction is delivered through a mix of seminars, case-based learning, simulation lab practice and field placements. Students work in small cohorts, and faculty mentorship is emphasised throughout the programme to help translate theory into practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold an active, unrestricted RN licence and a recognised bachelor’s degree. Many candidates will have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), though experienced RNs with an equivalent qualification and evidence of professional practice may also be considered. Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a current CV or résumé, professional references, and a personal statement describing goals for graduate study.

Programmes commonly require a minimum undergraduate GPA for admission consideration and may request a brief interview with faculty. Specific additional requirements — such as prerequisite coursework in statistics or physical/biological sciences, background checks, immunisation records and documentation of clinical competence — are handled as part of the admissions process.
