What you'll study

The programme builds a core grounding in general philosophical methods—logic, ethics, epistemology and theories of mind—alongside specialised work on Chinese philosophical traditions. You will study primary texts and interpretive approaches from Confucianism, Daoism (Taoism), Chinese Buddhism and later intellectual movements, and place these in dialogue with Western philosophical questions.

• Core philosophy modules: Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking and Formal Logic, Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, History of Western Philosophy.
• Chinese-focused modules: Classical Chinese Thought, Confucian Ethics, Daoist Philosophy, Buddhism in East Asia, Modern Chinese Intellectual History, Philosophy of Language with emphasis on cross-cultural semantic issues.
• Language and culture: Elementary to intermediate Mandarin Chinese (where offered), Chinese literature and cultural history, and courses in comparative religion or East Asian studies to support textual and cultural understanding.
• Research and skills: Close textual analysis, philosophical essay writing, comparative methodology, and options for an honours thesis or capstone project that can centre on Chinese philosophical texts or cross-cultural philosophical problems.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a high-school diploma or equivalent with a record of strong academic performance. Typical admissions criteria include a robust background in humanities or social sciences, demonstrated ability in written communication, and satisfactory grades in English-language courses. CWU may consider standardised tests where submitted but often evaluates applications holistically.

• Recommended preparation: coursework in English, history, languages, or social studies; prior experience with philosophical reading or Asian studies is beneficial but not required.
• International students: proof of English proficiency (for example via recognised tests) if English is not your first language; transcripts evaluated for equivalence to U.S. secondary education standards.
• Transfers: credit may be awarded for previous university-level coursework in philosophy, language or area studies subject to departmental review.
