What you'll study

The programme combines advanced study in theory, research methodology and a specialised area of education. Core coursework typically covers advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods, statistics for educational research, philosophy of education, and issues in educational policy and leadership. Students select a concentration or focus area—such as curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, special education, literacy, or educational technology—and complete electives and seminars aligned with that focus.

A substantial independent research component culminates in a doctoral dissertation that contributes original knowledge to the field. Alongside coursework and dissertation work, students engage in professional seminars on grant writing, ethics in research, teaching at the postsecondary level, and dissemination of research through conferences and publications.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised master’s degree in education or a closely related field and demonstrate preparation for doctoral-level study. A record of relevant professional experience in education, colleges or educational organisations is expected. Admission materials normally include official transcripts, a CV or résumé, a statement of purpose describing research interests, and academic or professional letters of recommendation.

Some applicants may be asked to submit a writing sample and participate in an interview with faculty. Standardised test requirements (such as the GRE) vary and may be considered on a case-by-case basis or waived depending on prior academic preparation and professional experience. International applicants must meet English language proficiency standards.
