What you'll study

This programme combines core historical methods with specialised courses on medieval and early modern Europe. You will study political, religious, intellectual and cultural developments across regions such as England, France, the Holy Roman Empire, Italy and Iberia, and examine topics including court culture, religious reformations, urban life, material culture, book history and print culture.

• Core skills and methods: historical research and writing, critical analysis of primary sources, palaeography and archival methods, quantitative and digital approaches to history.
• Chronological and thematic modules: surveys of medieval and early modern Europe, courses on the crusades and cross-cultural encounters, the Renaissance and humanism, the Reformation and confessional states, and the rise of print and vernacular cultures.
• Language training: options to study or continue Latin and modern European languages (for example French, German, Spanish or Italian) to support primary-source work.
• Specialist seminars: small-group, research-led seminars on topics such as medieval religion and ritual, gender and family in early modern Europe, urban cultures and economic life, or manuscript and book history.
• Capstone work: a senior research project or thesis that develops original archival or secondary-source research under faculty supervision.
• Practical experience: opportunities for internships with local museums, archives and cultural institutions in St. Louis, and options to undertake study-abroad terms or research in European archives where available.

Entry requirements

Saint Louis University considers applicants on the basis of secondary-school qualifications, overall academic record and the strength of written work and recommendations. Typical expectations include a strong high-school diploma with evidence of achievement in humanities subjects; readiness to study history at degree level; and, for students whose first language is not English, an approved English language qualification or equivalent evidence of proficiency.

Recommended preparation includes courses in history, literature, languages and writing. SLU also looks for demonstrated curiosity about historical questions, engagement in extracurricular activities related to research or community service, and a personal statement that explains academic interests.
