What you'll study

The MSc Finance combines core modules that build a foundation in corporate finance, asset pricing and financial econometrics with electives that allow specialisation. Teaching balances theory, empirical methods and practical skills through lectures, seminars, case studies and computing workshops.

• Core topics: corporate finance and financial strategy, asset pricing and portfolio theory, derivative securities and risk management, fixed income markets, and financial econometrics.
• Quantitative and computing skills: time series analysis, optimisation techniques, programming for finance (often using software such as Python, R, MATLAB or similar), and the use of market data platforms.
• Electives and specialisms: students typically choose from options such as behavioural finance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, sustainable finance, credit risk, advanced derivatives, and empirical finance projects.
• Assessment and project work: assessment is usually a mix of examinations, coursework, group projects and a substantial independent piece of work (research dissertation or applied consultancy project) that applies quantitative and empirical methods to a finance question.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree with substantial quantitative content — for example economics, finance, mathematics, engineering, physics, statistics or a related discipline. Relevant professional experience can strengthen an application but is not usually a substitute for a strong academic background in numerate subjects.

Typical admissions also consider applicants' performance in prior quantitative modules, references, and a personal statement outlining motivation and career objectives. International applicants must meet the university's English language requirements through an approved test or equivalent evidence of proficiency.
