What you'll study

The programme combines design thinking, engineering principles and user-centred practice to deliver end-to-end product development skills. You will study core topics such as concept generation and ideation, materials and manufacturing processes, CAD modelling and digital fabrication, ergonomics and human factors, sustainable design and lifecycle thinking, and design research methods.

Teaching typically includes studio-based projects, practical workshops in rapid prototyping and modelmaking, taught modules on technical aspects of production, and a substantial individual or group major project that is industry- or research-led. Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (for example a UK 2:1 or equivalent) in product design, industrial design, mechanical or manufacturing engineering, architecture, or a closely related discipline. Candidates with a lower honours degree plus relevant professional experience may also be considered.

A portfolio of work that demonstrates design thinking, sketching, CAD competence or evidence of practical project work is usually required for home and international applicants from creative disciplines. International students should meet the University’s English language requirements (for example an accepted test with an overall score equivalent to postgraduate entry), and may be asked to attend an interview or provide a project proposal as part of the selection process.
