What you'll study

This programme blends theory and practice to teach methods and tools for operational and organisational excellence. Core topics typically include lean thinking and lean operations, Six Sigma and statistical process control, quality management systems, continuous improvement strategies, process design and optimisation, and change and project management.

Students also study research and data analysis methods relevant to improvement programmes, digital technologies for operations (including aspects of Industry 4.0 and data analytics), and supply chain and operations strategy. Teaching methods combine lectures, workshops, case studies, simulation exercises and group work, with an emphasis on applied learning and problem solving.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree with a strong academic record, typically a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent, in a relevant subject such as engineering, business, management, operations, or a numerate discipline. Candidates with a lower-class degree plus relevant professional experience or an appropriate professional qualification may also be considered.

Relevant work experience in operations, manufacturing, supply chain, quality or continuous improvement is advantageous and can strengthen an application. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to satisfy the university's English language requirements; commonly accepted evidence includes recognised qualifications such as IELTS or equivalent scores at the level specified by the university.
