What you'll study

This three-year undergraduate degree blends core economics with applied finance. In the early years you study fundamentals such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics for economists and introductory statistics. As you progress you take intermediate and advanced modules in econometrics and quantitative methods alongside finance-focused units covering corporate finance, financial markets, investment and portfolio theory, derivatives and risk management.

• Core economics: microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, public economics, industrial organisation.
• Quantitative skills: calculus and linear algebra for economics, probability and statistics, econometrics, time-series methods.
• Finance modules: corporate finance, asset pricing, banking and financial intermediation, fixed income and derivatives, behavioural finance, empirical finance.
• Optional and applied work: programming for data analysis (e.g. Python, R), a dissertation or research project and optional modules in areas such as development economics, environmental economics or business studies.

Teaching combines lectures, small-group seminars and lab sessions for econometrics and computing. Assessment is through a mixture of exams, coursework, data-based projects and a supervised final-year dissertation or applied project.

Entry requirements

Typical offers are academically selective and place strong emphasis on quantitative ability. Successful applicants usually have one of the following:

• A-levels: high grades including A-level Mathematics (or equivalent quantitative subject).
• International Baccalaureate: a competitive overall score with high grades at Higher Level, including Mathematics.
• Other qualifications: recognized international or vocational equivalents, or passing an approved equivalent mathematics qualification.

We also consider mature applicants and those with relevant work experience. Applicants whose first language is not English are normally required to meet an English language proficiency standard.
