What you'll study

This joint honours degree integrates core international relations and politics modules with progressive modern language study. In early years you will build foundations in global politics, political theory, comparative politics and research methods alongside elementary to intermediate language modules focusing on grammar, speaking, listening and cultural studies. As you progress you take more specialised options across international relations—such as security studies, diplomacy and foreign policy, international political economy, development and human rights—while advancing to higher-level language work including literature, media, translation, interpreting and professional communication.

• Typical year structure: a mix of compulsory core politics/IR modules and language modules at matching fluency levels, with options to choose regional or thematic politics modules.
• Language options: commonly offered modern languages include French, Spanish and German; other languages may be available through the university’s language provision or exchange programmes.
• Year abroad/placement: the programme normally includes an integrated period abroad or a professional placement to consolidate language fluency and gain international experience. This can take the form of study at a partner university, work placement, or a combined study-work year.

Entry requirements

Swansea welcomes applicants with a broad range of qualifications. Typical entrants hold national qualifications such as A-levels, BTECs, Scottish Highers, an International Baccalaureate diploma, or equivalent international qualifications. Admissions look for a strong academic record overall and evidence of aptitude for both social science study and language learning.

• Language background: applicants are expected to demonstrate an ability to learn and develop a modern language. Prior study of the chosen language can be advantageous but beginners’ routes are often available for some languages.
• English language: applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university’s English language requirement through an approved qualification.
