What you'll study

The Liverpool BDS is a structured, integrated programme that moves from foundational biomedical sciences to progressive clinical responsibility. Early years combine anatomy, physiology, oral biology, dental materials and principles of restorative dentistry with simulation-based practical skills. As you progress you study core clinical disciplines such as restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics, paediatric dentistry, oral surgery, oral medicine, radiology and community dentistry.

Teaching methods include lectures, small-group case-based learning, laboratory practicals and supervised clinical sessions in skills laboratories and dental clinics. Clinical experience begins in simulated environments and progresses to treating patients in university dental clinics and on NHS placements, with a focus on clinical decision-making, patient communication, prevention and evidence-based practice. Professional subjects such as ethics, law, practice management, infection control and interprofessional working are integrated across the programme to prepare you for professional registration.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and typically requires strong academic achievement at secondary level. Applicants are expected to have science subjects at A level (or equivalent), most commonly Chemistry plus Biology, with a third subject often required; typical offers are at the higher A level grades. The University also requires satisfactory performance in the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) as part of its selection process.

Selection also involves assessment of personal statements, references and performance at interview, where communication skills, motivation for dentistry and suitability for clinical training are explored. Successful applicants must meet fitness to practise requirements and pass occupational health screening and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Mature applicants and those with relevant healthcare experience are considered on the same academic and professional criteria.

Career prospects

Graduating with a BDS enables registration with the relevant professional regulator and provides the foundation for a wide range of careers in dentistry. Many graduates enter Dental Foundation Training (DFT) to gain supervised experience in primary care. Career paths include working as an associate or principal in general dental practice, roles in community dental services, hospital dentistry and salaried primary care.

After initial qualification, dentists can pursue specialist training in areas such as orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontology, endodontics, paediatric dentistry and prosthodontics, or follow careers in public health, dental education, research, and management. Skills gained on the programme also support roles in industry, dental technology, oral health policy and international oral health initiatives.
