What you'll study

This degree combines core biological principles with focused study of animals across levels from molecules to ecosystems. In early years you will build a foundation in cell and molecular biology, genetics, ecology and statistics while developing practical laboratory and field skills. Typical modules include Animal Physiology, Behavioural Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Conservation Biology, Developmental Biology, Comparative Anatomy and Practical Field Techniques.

As you progress, teaching increasingly emphasises independent research and applied skills. You will take specialist modules in areas such as population ecology, wildlife management, parasitology and bioinformatics, and you will complete a substantial independent research project in your final year, supervised by academic staff. Practical learning is delivered through hands-on laboratory classes, computer-based data analysis, field courses and placements with external partners.

Entry requirements

Successful applicants typically have strong science qualifications. Typical entry profiles include A-levels with a mix of science subjects (for example biology or chemistry) at grades in the mid to high range, or equivalent vocational qualifications such as BTEC National Diplomas combined with A-levels. The International Baccalaureate and other international qualifications are accepted; candidates often meet the usual IB points range for science degrees.

Essential requirements normally include a good grounding in a biological science at post-16 level; mathematics or statistics at GCSE/level may be required or highly recommended. Mature applicants and those with relevant work or voluntary experience are considered on their individual merits. All applicants must meet the University's general English language requirements if English is not their first language.
