What you'll study

This three-year honours programme combines biomedical science, clinical skills and professional practice to develop competent, reflective physiotherapists. Core teaching covers anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, biomechanics and foundations of physical rehabilitation. You will study specialist areas such as musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, paediatric and geriatric physiotherapy alongside modules on clinical reasoning, pain science, prescribing awareness and long-term condition management.

From early in the programme you undertake supervised clinical placements across acute, community and specialist services within the Liverpool city region and wider networks. Teaching methods include lectures, small-group practical classes, anatomy and movement labs, simulated patient scenarios and interprofessional learning. Assessment is a mix of written exams, coursework, practical examinations (including OSCEs), reflective portfolios and the completion of assessed clinical competency sign-offs. The degree includes a substantial research methods module and a final-year research project or dissertation to develop skills in evidence-based practice and appraisal.

Entry requirements

Typical applicants hold A-levels, Scottish Highers, an International Baccalaureate or equivalent vocational qualifications with a science component. Successful candidates usually demonstrate achievement in a biology-related subject and meet standard academic thresholds set by the University. Equivalent qualifications such as BTEC (with suitable science units), Access to Higher Education diplomas with health science modules or international qualifications are considered.

In addition to academic attainment, applicants must provide evidence of an informed interest in physiotherapy, for example through observational or volunteer experience in healthcare or community settings. All offers are conditional on satisfactory occupational health clearance, an enhanced DBS (or local equivalent) check and up-to-date immunisations. English language proficiency is required for international applicants in line with University regulations.

Career prospects

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and are well placed to join the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). Typical entry-level roles include hospital or community physiotherapist positions within the NHS, private practice, sports and fitness settings, and specialist rehabilitation teams.

With further postgraduate training or specialised postgraduate certificates, graduates can move into areas such as musculoskeletal or sports physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, paediatrics, respiratory care, research and clinical education. Other career directions include roles in occupational health, community service development, case management, policy and commissioning, or progression to postgraduate study (MSc, PhD) for careers in research and academia.
