What you'll study

This programme provides a core grounding in the biological sciences relevant to animal health alongside specialist modules on infectious and non-infectious disease, immunology, pharmacology and pathology. Early years build fundamental knowledge in cell biology, genetics, physiology and biochemistry, while later years emphasise applied topics such as microbiology, parasitology, epidemiology, diagnostic techniques and animal welfare.

Practical laboratory classes and animal-based practicals develop technical skills in microscopy, molecular biology (PCR, sequencing concepts), immunoassays, histology and clinical diagnostics. Students also undertake laboratory-based and literature-based projects that teach experimental design, data analysis and scientific communication.

Optional elements often include research projects, work placements or modules in public health, toxicology, regulatory science and conservation-related topics. The programme is delivered by research-active staff and links theoretical understanding with hands-on experience to prepare students for laboratory and field roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong science background. Typical applicants hold qualifications in biology and/or chemistry at secondary school level, with additional mathematics or physics often advantageous. The programme accepts a range of UK and international qualifications; applicants should demonstrate competence in scientific subjects and laboratory work where possible.

Prospective students without traditional qualifications may be considered on the basis of relevant vocational qualifications, work experience or successful completion of recognised access programmes.
