The MSc in Analytical Chemistry at Loughborough University is a laboratory-led postgraduate programme designed to deepen practical and theoretical understanding of modern analytical techniques and data interpretation. It suits graduates in chemistry or closely related sciences who want to develop instrumental competence, method development skills and applied experience for careers in industry, research or regulatory sectors.

What you'll study

The programme combines taught modules with extensive laboratory work and a substantial research dissertation. Core themes include instrumental and separation techniques, spectroscopic methods, mass spectrometry and chemometrics for data analysis. Practical training focuses on modern chromatography (HPLC, GC), hyphenated techniques (GC–MS, LC–MS), NMR, IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods.

  • Analytical Instrumentation and Methods – principles and operation of major analytical instruments, practical calibration, validation and troubleshooting.
  • Separation Science – theory and practice of chromatographic methods, method optimisation and sample preparation strategies.
  • Spectroscopy and Structural Analysis – interpretation of spectroscopic data including NMR, IR and mass spectra for molecular identification.
  • Chemometrics and Data Handling – multivariate analysis, chemometric approaches to large datasets and quality assurance of analytical results.
  • Method Development and Validation – design of robust analytical methods, regulatory considerations and laboratory quality systems.
  • Research Project / Dissertation – independent laboratory or industry-linked project allowing you to apply techniques to a real research question and present original findings.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a UK upper second-class (2:1) honours degree, or an international equivalent, in chemistry or a closely related science with substantial laboratory content. Applicants with a lower second-class degree plus relevant professional or research experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis. You should demonstrate competence in practical laboratory work and familiarity with fundamental physical chemistry and analytical concepts.

International applicants will need to meet the University’s English language requirements; typical evidence includes a recognised academic IELTS score or equivalent demonstrating the ability to study at postgraduate level.

Career prospects

Graduates from this programme move into a wide range of analytical and scientific roles. Typical destinations include analytical scientist positions in pharmaceuticals, environmental and food testing laboratories, forensic and clinical diagnostic laboratories, petrochemical and materials sectors, and regulatory or public-health agencies. Other pathways include laboratory management, quality assurance and control, technical support and product development roles with instrument manufacturers, or further research degrees (PhD).
