What you'll study

The History BA combines thematic, regional and chronological approaches so you can build a programme that matches your interests. In early stages you study core skills in historical methods, source criticism and historiography alongside introductory modules covering periods such as medieval, early modern, nineteenth-century and modern history. As you progress you choose from optional modules that have included topics such as empire and migration, social and cultural history, history of gender and sexuality, political and diplomatic history, and the history of science and medicine.

Teaching is delivered through seminars, lectures and small-group tutorials, supported by independent research. All students normally complete a substantial independent project or dissertation in their final year, developing primary-source research and extended analytical writing. Practical learning opportunities include archive-based workshops, guided use of special collections, and skills sessions in public history, digital history and presentation.

Entry requirements

The programme accepts applications from students with a range of qualifications. Standard entry is through A-levels or equivalent qualifications; the University also welcomes students with vocational qualifications, Access to Higher Education diplomas, the International Baccalaureate, and recognised international qualifications. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong literacy and independent-study potential.

Typical offers ask for completion of three substantial qualifications at advanced level or equivalent. GCSE-level passes in English (and often mathematics) are commonly requested. Mature applicants and those with relevant work or life experience are considered on an individual basis; all applicants are assessed on academic potential, supporting statements and references.
