What you'll study

This MSc combines taught modules on research methodology with an extended independent research project. Core themes include experimental design, statistical analysis, critical appraisal of the scientific literature, laboratory techniques in molecular and cellular biology, and the ethical and regulatory frameworks that govern medical research.

• Research Methods and Statistics: study design, biostatistics, data visualisation and reproducible research practices.
• Molecular and Cellular Techniques: practical laboratory skills such as PCR, cell culture, protein analysis and microscopy, alongside quality control and troubleshooting.
• Translational and Clinical Research: principles of translational medicine, clinical trial design, patient-centred research and regulatory considerations.
• Specialist Topics: modules may cover genomics, immunology, infection biology, bioinformatics or systems biology depending on staff expertise and student choice.
• Independent Research Project: an extended laboratory- or data-based research project supervised by academic staff, culminating in a dissertation and oral presentation.

Teaching is typically delivered through a mix of laboratory practicals, seminars, workshops and one-to-one supervision for the research project. Assessment combines practical reports, written assignments, examinations, and the dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in a relevant subject such as biomedical science, biology, biochemistry, pharmacy, medicine or a closely related discipline. Candidates with a lower class of degree but with relevant laboratory experience or professional research experience may be considered on an individual basis. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English to the level required by the university through an approved qualification or test.
