What you'll study

This master’s delivers intensive training in empirical political research. Core study typically covers research design, advanced quantitative methods (including statistical modelling and data analysis), qualitative methods (such as interviews, focus groups and discourse analysis), and the philosophy and ethics of social research. Teaching emphasises hands‑on skills: students work with real datasets, learn statistical software packages commonly used in the discipline, and practise designing and executing small research projects.

• Research Design and Methods – formulating research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, and planning fieldwork.
• Advanced Quantitative Techniques – regression models, survey analysis, longitudinal and multilevel methods, and practical work with statistical software.
• Advanced Qualitative Techniques – thematic analysis, interview techniques, ethnographic methods and content/discourse analysis.
• Policy and Comparative Politics Modules – optional modules that allow students to apply methods to contemporary issues in governance, public policy, political behaviour and institutions.
• Research Dissertation – an independently supervised major project that applies methods learned to an original research question.

Delivery combines lectures, small‑group seminars, practical computer labs and one‑to‑one supervision during the dissertation phase. Assessment is typically through a mix of essays, project reports, laboratory exercises and the final research thesis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in politics, international relations, sociology, public policy, or a related social science discipline. Candidates with a lower class of degree plus relevant professional experience or evidence of quantitative/qualitative training may be considered. International applicants must demonstrate competence in English; acceptable evidence is required as part of the application. Entry to the programme is competitive and selection is based on academic qualifications, personal statement and references.
