What you'll study

This diploma combines farm production science with farm business and practical skills. Core study areas typically include animal production and welfare, pasture and crop management, farm systems and rotations, basic agronomy, livestock feeding and nutrition, machinery and workshop skills, farm biosecurity and environmental management, plus health and safety on the farm.

Modules emphasise applied learning and may cover topics such as:

• Farm production: sheep, beef and dairy systems, reproduction and animal husbandry practices.
• Pasture and cropping: pasture species selection, soil fertility, basic crop establishment and crop management.
• Farm business: budgeting, record keeping, basic farm accounting, and cost control.
• Practical skills: machinery operation and maintenance, fencing, animal handling and on‑farm problem solving.
• Environmental and regulatory aspects: nutrient management, waterways protection, and compliance with biosecurity and animal welfare standards.
• Workplace skills: workplace communication, health and safety, and teamwork on rural work sites.

Teaching is typically a mixture of classroom-based theory, hands-on workshops at the university teaching farm, field trips to commercial properties and industry partners, and may include a workplace placement or practicum with a local farm employer.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary school qualification or equivalent; practical farm experience is valued and can strengthen an application. Mature applicants with relevant workplace experience are considered. Applicants must meet Lincoln University’s standard English language requirements or demonstrate equivalent competence in English.

Specific admission conditions may include subject prerequisites in sciences or numeracy for some courses, and applicants should check with the university for guidance on portfolios, references or evidence of farm experience if required.

Career prospects

Graduates of the Diploma in Farm Management are prepared for operational and supervisory roles on farms and in associated rural industries.
