What you'll study

The programme combines core project management theories and methods with applied skills in planning, control and stakeholder engagement. You study a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques for managing scope, time, cost and risk, together with modules on governance, procurement, and the commercial context of projects.

• Core project management methods – scheduling, earned value management, critical path analysis and resource levelling.
• Risk and assurance – risk identification and treatment, contingency planning, quality assurance and project audits.
• Commercial and contract management – procurement strategy, contracting models, supplier management and claims.
• Leadership and stakeholder management – team leadership, negotiation, communications and stakeholder engagement in complex environments.
• Programme and portfolio perspectives – aligning projects to strategy, benefits realisation and governance at programme level.
• Research methods and major project – applied research methods followed by an individual dissertation or applied project that addresses an industry problem or an organisational challenge.
• Contemporary methods – exposure to agile approaches, digital tools for project delivery and data-driven decision making.

Teaching typically combines lectures, case studies, group work, practical workshops and guest sessions from industry practitioners. Assessment is by a mix of coursework, group project work, examinations and the final major project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree from a recognised university. A UK upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or an international equivalent is commonly required; candidates with a lower undergraduate classification and substantial relevant professional experience may also be considered. A background in any discipline can be acceptable, though demonstrable numeracy and analytical ability are helpful.

Work experience in project-based roles strengthens an application but is not always mandatory for recent graduates. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements (typical evidence includes recognised tests with minimum score thresholds and component minima).
