The MEng Mechanical Engineering is an integrated four-year programme that builds from core engineering fundamentals to advanced specialist topics and an independent research or design project. Early years cover mathematics for engineers, mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, engineering design and core laboratory and CAD/CAM skills to ensure a solid foundation in analysis and practical work.
In middle years you study more advanced structural mechanics, dynamics, heat transfer, machine elements, control systems and manufacturing processes. Teaching methods combine lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes, computer-aided engineering, group design projects and case studies.
Final-year modules focus on advanced design, optimisation, computational methods (including finite element and CFD), vibrations and acoustics, composite materials, turbomachinery and specialist options aligned to staff research and industry needs. The programme culminates in a substantial individual or group MEng project that is research- or industry-focused and demonstrates independent technical competence and project management.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small-group tutorials, laboratory sessions, computer practicals and supervised project work. Assessment uses written examinations, coursework, laboratory reports, design assignments, presentations and project dissertations.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong ability in mathematics and a physical science (typically physics). Typical entry is from secondary school qualifications (for example A-level, IB or equivalent) with high achievement in maths and a second technical subject. Mature applicants and those with relevant vocational qualifications or BTEC may be considered; applicants with non‑UK qualifications should supply recognised equivalents.
The programme also accepts students progressing from the University of Liverpool Foundation Year in Engineering and Science where appropriate. All applicants must satisfy the University’s English language requirements if their first language is not English.
Graduates leave with a level of education that meets academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated/Chartered Engineer when combined with appropriate professional experience and further learning. Career destinations include design and development roles in automotive and aerospace companies, energy and power generation, manufacturing and process industries, consulting engineering firms, and technology and robotics companies.
