What you'll study

This integrated masters combines core biological principles with specialist options and a sustained research project in the final year. Early years build a strong foundation in cell and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, physiology, ecology and microbiology, alongside practical laboratory and field skills. You will learn experimental design, statistics and data analysis, and develop vocational skills such as scientific communication and laboratory management.

In later years you choose from advanced modules that may include molecular techniques, genomics and bioinformatics, developmental biology, ecological and conservation science, neurobiology, immunology, and applied microbiology. The programme culminates in an extended independent research project or dissertation supervised by a research-active member of staff, giving hands-on experience of project planning, execution, data interpretation and scientific reporting.

Entry requirements

Entry is normally at undergraduate level to the integrated masters route and is aimed at applicants with strong science qualifications. Applicants are expected to have a solid background in biology or a related science from A-levels, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, international qualifications or recognised vocational equivalents. Typical offers take account of the applicant’s science subject choices and overall academic profile.

Keele welcomes applications from students with BTECs, access qualifications and international qualifications; such applications are considered on their academic merits and the content of the prior study. Applicants may also be expected to demonstrate practical experience or interest through personal statements, references, or interview. Specific GCSE or equivalent requirements in English and mathematics may apply for some applicants.
