What you'll study

The programme delivers core business disciplines alongside modules that focus specifically on human resource management. In early years you study foundations such as accounting and finance for managers, marketing, organisational behaviour, operations and management theory. HR-focused modules typically cover topics such as resourcing and talent management, learning and development, employee relations, reward and performance management, and employment law.

Later stages emphasise applied skills and strategic issues: HR strategy, organisational development, HR analytics and people-related aspects of leadership and change. You will study research methods and complete a substantial business project or dissertation that allows you to investigate a HR or management issue in depth. Teaching is a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies, group work, presentations and practical workshops; assessment uses essays, reports, exams, portfolios and workplace-based assessments.

Students can usually choose options to reflect career interests, such as international business, entrepreneurship, digital HR tools, or project management. There are opportunities for a work placement year or shorter industry placements and for study abroad, which help apply learning to real organisational contexts.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have completed a recognised secondary qualification such as A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, or an equivalent access/Foundation programme. Keele considers a broad range of qualifications; typical entry is through three A-levels or the equivalent, but mature applicants and those with relevant work experience are also welcome.

Requirements for GCSE-level English and mathematics (or recognised equivalents) apply because the course builds quantitative and communication skills. International students must meet Keele’s English language requirements through qualifications such as IELTS, GCSE/IGCSE English, or recognised equivalents. Admissions also take personal statements, references and any relevant work or voluntary experience into account.

Career prospects

Graduates combine a strong business skillset with HR knowledge, preparing them for roles such as HR assistant/administrator, recruitment consultant, learning and development officer, reward analyst, or trainee HR business partner. The programme also supports routes into graduate management schemes, business analysis, consultancy and entrepreneurship where people and organisational skills are important.

Many students use placement opportunities or internships secured during the degree to move into their first professional role; others progress to postgraduate study or professional HR qualifications to specialise further. Employers that commonly recruit graduates in this field include private and public sector organisations, consultancies, recruitment firms and HR service providers.
