What you'll study

The programme builds a core understanding of ecological principles alongside practical conservation techniques. Early modules introduce population and community ecology, evolution, animal behaviour, plant biology and basic statistics. Practical laboratory and field‑based sessions teach surveying methods, species identification, habitat assessment and experimental design.

Later years emphasise applied skills and specialist topics such as biodiversity monitoring, conservation biology, habitat restoration and land management, ecological modelling and geographic information systems (GIS). Students complete research training in statistics and data handling and undertake an independent research project or dissertation, producing primary data through fieldwork on or off the Keele campus.

Many students can choose optional modules that reflect local and global conservation issues (for example freshwater ecology, invasive species, conservation policy and environmental education). The programme is delivered through lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals and extensive fieldwork; there is also support for arranging a supervised professional placement year or a study abroad experience where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong interest in biology or environmental science. Typical entry is via A‑levels, BTEC or equivalent qualifications in biological or relevant scientific subjects; evidence of practical experience such as fieldwork, volunteering with conservation organisations or relevant employment is highly regarded. Applicants without formal science qualifications but with substantial relevant experience are considered on an individual basis.

Entry also normally requires numeracy and communication skills; colleges and the university may seek GCSE (or equivalent) passes in English and Mathematics or acceptable alternatives. International applicants should provide recognised qualifications and evidence of English language proficiency where required.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to roles across the environmental and conservation sector. Common destinations include ecological consultancy (protected species surveys, environmental impact assessment), conservation organisations and NGOs, local authority planning and biodiversity roles, nature reserve and estate management, wildlife trust and parks work, and environmental education and outreach.

Many students progress to postgraduate study or professional training (for example MSc programmes, doctoral research, or vocational certificates in habitat management and surveying). The degree also develops transferable skills valued by employers — data analysis, report writing, GIS, project management and field logistics — which are useful in research, policy, environmental monitoring and the wider environmental services industry.
