See the degree grade →This Zoology bachelor programme provides a broad understanding of animal biology, behaviour, ecology and evolution, combining laboratory, field and research-led teaching. It suits students who want a rigorous scientific grounding in zoology with practical skills for careers in conservation, research, environmental consultancy or further study.
The programme covers the core biological sciences with a focus on animals. In the first year you build foundation knowledge in cell biology, physiology, genetics, ecology and the practical laboratory and field skills needed for later years. Teaching methods include lectures, practical laboratory sessions, seminars and regular fieldwork on and off campus.
In later years you study specialised topics such as animal behaviour, vertebrate and invertebrate physiology, population and community ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation biology, animal development and immunology. Quantitative and analytical skills are emphasised through modules in biostatistics, experimental design and bioinformatics. You will also undertake a substantial independent research project or dissertation in your final year, supervised by academic staff in the School of Life Sciences.

Applicants are normally expected to have A-levels (or equivalent) with biology or a closely related science. Typical offers require successful performance in two or three A-levels including biology, or completion of an appropriate BTEC or Access to HE Diploma with science content. Mathematics or another science subject at A-level is advantageous.
Keele accepts a range of qualifications and recognises equivalent international credentials; prospective students should check specific entry requirements for their qualification route. Applicants will also need to meet standard GCSE requirements in English and mathematics (or international equivalents). Where English is not the applicant's first language, an approved English language qualification is required.
Graduates leave with skills in experimental design, data analysis, scientific communication and practical laboratory and field techniques. These are directly relevant to careers in ecology and conservation, wildlife and zoo management, environmental consultancy, ecological surveying, and governmental or NGO conservation roles. Many graduates also move into laboratory-based roles in biotechnology, pharmaceutical research or genetic analysis.
The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study (MSc, MRes, PhD) and professional training routes such as teaching or specialist conservation training.
