What you'll study

The program combines foundational biomedical and psychosocial theory with applied occupational therapy practice. Core study areas include human anatomy and neuroscience, lifespan development, occupation and participation, clinical reasoning and assessment, intervention design, and professional ethics. You will also study approaches to practice in key areas such as paediatrics, mental health, ageing and chronic disease, neurological rehabilitation and community-based services.

Teaching methods mix lectures, tutorials, skills laboratories and simulated practice, supported by structured, assessed clinical placements. Research and evidence-based practice are embedded through modules in research methods, critical appraisal and a capstone or honours-style research project. Typical topics and modules include:

• Foundations of Occupational Therapy — history, occupation theory and professional roles
• Human Structure and Function — anatomy, physiology and neuroscience relevant to function
• Lifespan and Development — developmental milestones and ageing
• Assessment and Intervention — standardised assessment tools, goal setting, therapeutic approaches and assistive technology
• Practice Areas — paediatrics, mental health, neurological rehabilitation, aged care and community services
• Professional Practice and Leadership — ethics, service delivery models, interprofessional practice and cultural safety
• Research and Evidence-Based Practice — research design, statistics, critical appraisal and a project or dissertation
• Clinical Placements — multiple supervised placements across hospital, community and school settings to consolidate practice skills

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and typically requires completion of senior secondary school or an equivalent tertiary qualification. Applicants are expected to demonstrate competence in English; many successful applicants present a competitive selection rank from their secondary studies or a recognised pathway qualification such as a diploma. Southern Cross University also considers mature-age applicants and applicants with prior tertiary study.

Selection may include additional requirements such as a written statement, interview or documented evidence of relevant volunteer or work experience in health or community services. Because the program includes clinical placements, offers are conditional on meeting clinical requirements before placements begin — for example up-to-date immunisations, a police/background check, a working with children check (where applicable) and current first aid/CPR certification.
